Gov suspends 143 traditional rulers

John Eyikwaje who is the Special Adviser to Governor
Liyel Imoke of Cross River State on Chieftaincy Affairs has confirmed the suspension of nine clan leaders and 134 royal chiefs across the state.

In a statement, Eyikwaje said the development
followed their alleged involvement in partisan
politics. The Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) had earlier announced that local government elections in the state would hold on September 21 2013, and since then political activities across the state have heightened.

The statement added that the affected traditional rulers failed in their responsibilities to avert ugly situations in their domains, despite government’s efforts to sustain peace in the state. The government also expressed sadness over the reported loss of lives in Yakurr Local Government Area and Ebo- Oyadama in Obubra Local Government Areas.
